Dapol is to produce a newly-tooled 24ton iron ore hopper wagon for ‘O’ gauge, with the project already at an advanced state.
Built in the late 1940s/early 1950s, 1,000 22ton Diagram 161 and 1500 24ton Diagram 162 wagons were completed by Charles Roberts and Cambrian. Around half the Diagram 161 examples were later upgraded to 24tons. They were primarily built for iron ore use, but also carried sand, limestone and chalk in later life.
Currently at the first Engineering Prototype (EP) sample stage, Dapol’s all-new ‘O’ gauge model of the 24ton vehicles will be available in seven different colour schemes finished as B435007 in BR bauxite (Cat No. 7F-033-001), B436275 in as-preserved BR grey (7F-033-002), B436917 in BR grey with Empty to Ardley WR lettering (7F-033-003), B437221 in BR bauxite with Sand branding (7F-033-004), B435549 in BR grey with Ore hopper lettering (7F-033-005), 279 in BISC red oxide (7F-033-006) and 2512 in Richard Thomas red oxide (7F-033-007).
Each model will benefit from a die-cast metal chassis, brass bearing pockets, sprung metal buffers, separately applied detailing, sprung metal coupling hooks and three-link couplings.
Priced at £70 each, release is anticipated during the final quarter of 2023.
