PREVIEW: Stamford Model Railway Exhition 2023

Market Deeping Model Railway Club’s annual model railway exhibition returns in mid-May. MARK CHIVERS outlines some of the highlights of this year’s show.

Final preparations are underway for Stamford Model Railway Exhibition, which is set to be its largest event to date, running across four halls at Stamford Welland Academy, Green Lane, Stamford on the weekend of May 13/14 2023.

27 layouts are booked to attend, including Hornby Magazine’s popular narrow gauge ‘OO9’ Fairlie Syniad Da and our latest ‘OO’ gauge diesel depot layout, Natford TMD, which will appear in late 1990s-early 2000s era for its Stamford appearance. Several layouts that have appeared within the pages of Hornby Magazine will also be there including Nick Skelton’s ‘OO’ gauge Rumbling Bridge (HM94), North of England Line (NOEL) Group’s ‘N’ gauge Scarlington (set to appear in HM192) and Boston Model Railway Society’s ‘OO’ gauge Tytton Hall Yard (HM141).

Also due to appear are Tony Forward’s Boghampton (‘OO’), Shildon Model Railway Club’s Brotton Mill (‘OO’), East Bedfordshire Model Railway Society’s Cheriton Bishop (‘OO’), Market Deeping Model Railway Club’s 1870s period model of Euston station (‘OO’), Graham Morfoot’s Gracetown Bank (‘OO’), John Spence’s Lisworth Bay (‘N’), Little Layout Company’s Ranelagh Bridge (‘OO’) and more.

The Hornby Magazine editorial team will be at the show across the weekend, while a selection of more than 20 traders has also been gathered including Amberley Components, Aspire Gifts and Models, Brushes4Models, Elaine’s Trains, Frizinghall Models and Railways, Keith’s Models, P&D Marsh, Squires Model and Craft Tools, Trains4U, Wrenn Specialist and others.

Several modelling experts will also be on hand for the weekend including Richard Wilson demonstrating his weathering techniques, Tony Wright with his locomotive maintenance clinic and Brian Bartholomew showing how he builds teak carriages from scratch. Don’s Models will also be showcasing a selection of hand-built ‘O’ gauge locomotives.

Peterborough Society of Model Engineers will also be offering rides on its 5in gauge outdoor electric and live steam trains, with more than 100ft of track.

Doors open at 10am each day and discounted advance tickets are available to purchase now, starting at £6.50 adults and £3 children (under 16). On-the-day tickets will also be available at the door.

Free parking is available, while a special bus service will be operating between Stamford railway station and the venue on the Saturday only.
