Rails of Sheffield reveals Class 88 electro-diesel for ‘OO’

Rails of Sheffield has teamed up with Dapol to offer a brand-new ready-to-run model of the Direct Rail Services operated Class 88 electro-diesel for ‘OO’ gauge.

THE DIRECT Rail Services Class 88 Bo-Bo electro-diesel is the latest locomotive project to be announced by Rails of Sheffield. The all-new model is being produced by Dapol with release expected in the second quarter of 2024.

The real Class 88s were introduced in 2015-2016 with a total of 10 locomotives being built by Stadler. They have both 25kV AC overhead electric capability as well as a 940hp Caterpillar V12 diesel engine to allow them to work off the overhead electric network.

The Class 88s are used on long distance container trains and are often seen in partnership with the Stadler (previously Vossloh) Class 68 diesels. All are operated by Direct Rail Services and carry numbers 88001-88010 with several carrying names which were originally applied to Woodhead Class 76 electrics.

The all-new ‘OO’ gauge model is being produced by Dapol exclusively for Rails of Sheffield as a follow up to the popular Dapol Class 68 diesel. The specification includes authentic liveries, printed nameplates with etched versions supplied in the box, sprung buffers, etched grilles and more.

Inside the plan calls for a heavy die-cast chassis with all-wheel pick-up and drive, a five-pole motor, twin flywheels, a Plux22 decoder socket, space for a speaker, NEM coupling pockets plus a suite of lighting functions. The latter will include white marker and headlights, tail lights, Halo lights (DCC only) and cab lights, all of which can be independently switched with DCC. Analogue modellers will also be able to control the lights using manual switches.

The pantograph will be posable in DC operation and powered with a servo motor in both DCC fitted and DCC sound fitted versions. Sound recording is currently in progress and Dapol has said that it will be include both electric and diesel sounds which can be switches with a function key.

Prices start from £199.95 for DCC ready models and rise to £249.95 for DCC fitted and £329.95 for DCC sound fitted examples. Delivery is expected in the second quarter of 2024.
