GWR 'Iron Minks' and more for Rapido Trains UK

Rapido Trains UK is to produce the Great Western Railway Diagram V6 'Iron Mink' as its next 'OO' gauge wagon project, together with a Diagram O21 four-plank open wagon, which utilises the same chassis.

More than 4,000 metal-bodied 'Iron Mink' vans were built in the late 1800s. They featured 16ft 6in chassis' and were well-travelled throughout their careers which lasted into the British Railways era. Their metal construction was particularly useful for transporting gunpowder, especially during the First and Second World Wars.

Rapido Trains UK is planning to produce 21 different models initially, with detail variations incorporated within the new tooling suite including three different doors, end ventilator styles and braking arrangements. Liveries range from standard GWR schemes to a few non-prototypical liveries (see table below).

Allied to this release, the company is also planning 'OO' gauge models of the numerous Diagram O21 four-plank open wagons, which feature the same 16ft 6in underframe. First introduced in 1886, huge numbers were built for use across GWR territory and eight different models are planned in the initial batch (see table below for further details.)

Currently at the First Engineering Prototype (EP) stage, the company has released photographs of hand-decorated samples of the new wagons and following any necessary amendments, production is due to start later this Summer.
