Rapido Trains UK is to produce a newly-tooled South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR) Diagram 1558 20ton six-wheel brake van for ‘OO’ gauge.
First introduced in the late 1890s, these distinctive six-wheel brake vans initially appeared with an open platform at one end and an enclosed veranda at the other, while from 1910 a batch of 50 vans appeared with enclosed verandas located at each end. 25 of the earlier vehicles were subsequently rebuilt to resemble the rest of the fleet sometime later.
Rapido Trains UK’s extensive tooling suite will reflect the prototypes with two body styles planned for general release to include the dual veranda versions ‘as-built’ and the rebuilt single-ended examples with dual verandas. Ten models are planned (see separate table) reflecting the vehicles throughout their careers into BR days.
In addition, Rails of Sheffield has commissioned the manufacturer to produce the original single veranda SECR six-wheel brake vans as an exclusive for the retailer. Three individually numbered ‘OO’ models are expected (see table) and will be finished in South Eastern Railway and SECR colours.
Priced at £39.95 each, they are currently in tooling with delivery anticipated in late 2022/early 2023.
