Revell collaborated with world-famous British heavy metal band Iron Maiden to give its 1/32 Spitfire Mk.II new markings, coinciding with the former’s The Legacy of the Beast tour. Rock-loving Swedish modeller Johan Augustsson leapt at the chance of completing it.
Being an icon of the aircraft world, the Spitfire needs little introduction: developed in the 1930s with production started in 1938, the type in all its versions became an important addition to the RAF. It was the only British fighter produced continuously throughout the war and served in more than 30 air arms globally. The last operational sortie of an RAF Spitfire was on April 1, 1954 with the last non-operational flight in RAF service occurring during June 1957.
Arguably less well known to many is the history of Iron Maiden, formed by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris in Leyton, East London, in 1975. It became a pioneer of a new wave of British heavy metal, achieving initial success during the early 1980s and especially after the release of 1982 album The Number of the Beast.
