Usually more at home building flying machines, Alan Price tackles Tamiya’s 1/24 McLaren Senna hypercar – whose wings are meant to keep it firmly on the ground!

I’ve been building kits for Airfix Model World for more than ten years now and in that time, all bar two of the builds have been aircraft subjects – the pair of anomalous projects both involved tanks.

However, I’ve always been a car and motor racing enthusiast, and recently I’d started to build a few automotive kits for a change – and found them really enjoyable. When Tamiya’s new 1/24 McLaren Senna was launched at the start of this year, I picked up one of the new offerings and the editor asked if I’d like to build it for the magazine. The striking high-performance machine is the third addition to McLaren’s ‘Ultimate Performance Series’, and is named after legendary Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna. It is based on the firm’s 720S, retaining the type’s mid-mounted turbocharged V8 engine, albeit in developed form, but adds various aerodynamics – notably striking adjustable wings.
