NAVAL LEGEND: VICTORY MODELLING BOOK

Any modeller interested in naval subjects, particularly those that employed sail power, must surely have HMS Victory on their build list… if they haven’t completed it already. This 64-page softback, available from Pen & Sword, offers a fascinating and useful history narrative on the vessel, covering its design and construction, career highlights and notable campaigns/battles. Lovely visuals of the ship come via scans of drawings and paintings in the National Maritime Museum, and also included is a chronological service history, highlighting refit activity and other details.

There then follows an expansive section aimed directly at the modeller, this providing appraisals of styrene, mixed-media and wooden kits of Victory, in different scales. Notable are Airfix’s 1959 offering of an indeterminable scale, Revell’s 1/450 and 1/225 kits, the later Airfix 1/180 kit and the 1/100 scale model by Heller. The book also delves into various aftermarket accessories for different Victory kits, such as wooden decks, structural details in photo-etched bras, turned brass cannon and even CNC-cut/sewn fabric sails.

A gallery section offers photos of two different scratch-built Victory models, as well as a completed Heller 1/100 kit, before a chapter on the vessel’s general appearance supplies narrative, model photos and excellent colour artwork showing the various structural nuances/colours that changed over time.

Whether just one Victory model is enough, or you are more serious about the subject and wish to complete several replicas, this book is a must… and wallet friendly at £16.99, direct from Pen & Sword.
