WHAT THE ‘DEUCE’?

WHAT THE ‘DEUCE’?

If you have an F-102 Delta Dagger build planned, you won’t want to miss Detail & Scale’s reference book on the type.

WHAT THE ‘DEUCE’?

The F-102 is not an extensively kitted subject; Monogram produced it in 1/48 scale (raised panel lines, subsequently re-issued by Revell and Encore), while Hasegawa took the plunge long ago with its own 1/72 raised-line offering.
At least we have a modern, 1/72 new-tool example from Meng, which is very good. But if you want to build any of these, Detail & Scale’s softback Colours & Markings book on the type is useful indeed, as it provides a unit-by-unit study, with many colour/black and white photos, and detailed information on the different paint schemes.

WHAT THE ‘DEUCE’?Separate sections inform on the Aircraft Gray, South-East Asia and Aluminium lacquer liveries, and there are also markings specification pages charting features such as insignia, serial, call number, jet warning stripe and anti-glare panel placement for each scheme. And regarding the lacquer ‘uniform’, there’s even a table listing the recipient airframes and their operators.

The user unit chapters each offer a selection of photos, squadron badges and colour profile artwork for a truly rounded examination, and the extended captions provide plenty of useful data, especially regarding which aircraft had either the Case X or XX wing formats (the difference is explained). And as well as USAF Air Defense Command airframes, the book also covers those employed by the Air National Guard and test/evaluation units.

WHAT THE ‘DEUCE’?

There’s plenty of inspiration here for anyone wanting to model the F-102 (nicknamed the ‘Deuce’, referring to the US moniker for the number 2 on dice or playing cards), which will quickly have you surfing the ‘net for available decals to satisfy your colour scheme desires. The book is available in print form at US$23.99, as well as digital (Kindle, US$14.99). For further details visit: www.detailandscale.com
