‘N’ Gauge Heavy Metal Part One
Weathering in the smaller scales hasn’t always received the attention it deserves. TIM SHACKLETON tries different approaches as he weathers a selection of big freight locomotives in 2mm scale.
HALIFAX POWELL STREET
Competition between the pre-Grouping railways for access to Lancashire and Yorkshire’s towns and cities was fierce. PETER DURANT shows how he created this fictional station in Halifax which has a strong grounding in reality in ‘OO’ scale. Photography, Peter Durant.
HEAVY METAL PART TWO
Less is usually more when it comes to creating effective weathering effects in the smaller scales. Having gone for broke with a battle-scarred ‘WD’, TIM SHACKLETON opts for the subtle approach with a further selection of heavy freight locomotives.
GRAND CENTRAL Mk 4 REPAINTS
Grand Central’s short-lived plan to introduce Class 90 hauled Mk 4 carriage formations on the West Coast Main Line inspired JOHN PILGRIM to repaint a rake of 1990s era Hornby models. Here he explains his process for this ‘OO’ gauge project.
‘Peak’ practice
The Bachmann Class 45 is a simple locomotive for a sound installation project, as MIKE WILD shows in this guide using a ZIMO sound decoder.
VIDEO: Weathering a Fowler '7F'
In this video weathering guide Mike Wild sets about giving Fowler '7F' 2-8-0 53808 a realistic weathered finishing using Lifecolor acrylic paints and an Iwata airbrush. Join him in the workshop here to watch the full process unfold.
Newton Grove 19F
A visit to a friend’s ‘O’ gauge layout was all the inspiration JONATHAN NEWTON needed to switch scales and start a new collection. Newton Grove shed is the result – a compact portrayal of the final years of steam in the North West.
S&D '7F' 2-8-0s
Throughout the history of the railways there have been many small classes of locomotive designed for specific tasks but, as EVAN GREEN-HUGHES describes, few have gained the popularity of the former Somerset and Dorset '7F' 2-8-0s.
VIDEO: Bachmann Fowler '7F' 2-8-0 sound demonstration
In the latest issue of Hornby Magazine we show how to install a ZIMO sound decoder with YouChoos sound into the Bachmann Fowler '7F' 2-8-0. Join Mike Wild in the workshop as he demonstrates the sound projects features on Topley Dale.
Graham Farish LMS ‘Parrot’ flat
New for ‘N’ gauge from the Graham Farish stable is the utilitarian ‘Parrot’ bogie flat wagon. These vehicles were built between 1917-1919 and were originally designed for War Department use, but later moved across to serve the LMS and BR.
