Hornby’s revitalised BR MK3s

The British Rail Mk 3 carriage is an essential part of the modern and recent railway scenes. Hornby has gone back to the drawing board to create a new collection of coaching stock, as MIKE WILD explains.

The BR Mk 3 carriage has been a fundamental part of the daily railway scene since 1975. More than 800 were built for use in High Speed Train (HST) formations as well as for locomotive haulage. Substantial numbers, albeit modified, remain in frontline service today.

Hornby produced its first Mk 3s in the 1980s, but they were shorter than the real thing to traverse train set curves of the period. However, since 1999 it has been making correct scale length models of the fleet which were further bolstered by the acquisition of the Lima tools in 2004.
