During the Korean War, it became apparent to the US Army that a dedicated rotary-wing gunship was needed to escort the more vulnerable transport helicopters, as fixed-wing fighters were not always readily available.
In the post-war period, the Army ‘unofficially’ tested several type of armed helicopters, but once the Bell UH-1A became available it was chosen as the premier weapons platform. In 1962, the Huey (as it was by then known) was deployed to Vietnam, where it was subsequently replaced by the more capable -B and -C versions pending the arrival of a ‘true’ gunship.
