The Hornby Class 31 is a simple locomotive to add Triplex Sound into and in this guide we move on to upgrade the speaker. MIKE WILD explains how.
Installing sound doesn’t have to be difficult, and the Hornby Class 31 is a simple locomotive to add digital sound into. The model has been around since 2006, and until 2023 contained an 8-pin decoder socket. Models produced since 2023 have been equipped with a 21-pin decoder socket.
Our project locomotives are a pair of Network Rail liveried 8-pin socket examples. They have been waiting in the wings for a sound upgrade, but because of the plan to operate them in top-and-tail formation on a test train they have been on a back burner. However, the Hornby HM|DCC app makes operating locomotives like this as a pair simpler as it includes easy reading and adjustment of Configuration Variables (CVs) which manage how the model responds on the track including the ability to switch the direction of travel and to turn off sound function operation in specific directions with Masking.
