Rockwell’s B-1 Lancer had its origins back in the 1960s; at that time the concept of a high-altitude, high-speed bomber was negated by the introduction of surface-to-air missiles, as demonstrated by the shooting down of US pilot Francis Gary Powers’ Lockheed U-2 spy plane. What was desired was a low-level penetrator aircraft with the speed of the B-58 Hustler and the payload of the B-52 Stratofortress.
