Thanks to this French kit designer, we now have the first 1/48 Super Mystère of the modern era, as CHRIS CLIFFORD discusses.
You don’t have to be a diehard fan of French jet fighters to recognise the Super Mystère as an attractive aircraft. It’s rather like the illegitimate son of an F-100 and a Hawker Hunter. Therefore, it’s odd that there has been just one previous 1/48 kit of the type, a limited-run product by French firm Fonderie Miniatures… but this was certainly of its time.
Now, however, we have an all-new kit of the Super Mystère B2 in this scale, from French company Azur-FRROM (FR7001). Designed in France, but tooled and moulded by Special Hobby in the Czech Republic, it’s a world away from the FM kit. As you’d expect, it has fine panel line engraving, but also excellent detail throughout. It’s an all-styrene affair, with five grey runners and one clear. Note that Azur-FRROM has already offered the type in 1/72 scale, via two French Air Force boxings. Thankfully, modellers who favour 1/48 now have their own chance to build this eye-catching machine
