More than 470 layouts have graced the pages of Hornby Magazine since our first issue in March 2007. For this special feature we went back into the archives to pick an outstanding crop of 10, the first of which we showed in HM4. THE SOUTHERN TERMINUS of the famous Somerset & Dorset route is the setting for this outstanding ‘OO’ gauge exhibition layout. It was built by the South Coast Model Railway Development Group and is a regular on the circuit with appearances including the Great Electric Train Show in 2019 where it was awarded Best Scenic layout as well as winning the new Hornby Magazine Model Railway Award for Layout of the Year voted for by magazine readers.
The layout models the terminus and its approaches and features scale length trains hauled by an appropriate selection of ex-Southern Railway motive power alongside the relatively new order of the BR Standards. Being the terminus of the S&D, it also sees ex-LMS locomotives and coaching stock arrive including the Fowler ‘7F’ 2-8-0s built specifically for the challenging route to Bath Green Park.
