Childhood memories from the Croydon area inspired RAY TAYLOR and ANNA BASS to build White Meadow Quarry. This busy 'N' gauge layout combines main line and industrial railways in an unusual setting. Watch the full video here. Photography, Mike Wild.
WELCOME to White Meadow Quarry, our compact ‘N’ gauge exhibition layout which depicts an old quarry nearing the end of its productive life. It is still rail connected and features a couple of diesel shunters which are used to manoeuvre wagons of chalk as they are mined. The main line remains in regular use and runs past the quarry, transporting the workers and patrons of the nearby pub.
The scene is loosely based on the countryside around Croydon in South London, as Ray remembers it from his childhood; but while it’s inspired by that particular location, White Meadow Quarry is fictitious and could be anywhere in Southern England. It reflects a day when a bus rally is in progress on a nearby field, and morris dancers are performing outside the pub.
Above: Stanier ‘8F’ 2-8-0 48773 makes light work of a short mixed freight as it powers through White Meadow station, while a two-car Class 108 DMU rumbles into the platform from the branch line.
