Scale ModelWorld 2023 Show Report Part 2

In this second part of our report on Scale ModelWorld 2023, we focus on the multitude of club and Special Interest Group displays

Scale ModelWorld might have a very popular competition, but for many the big draw (along with the traders) is the collection of displays by IPMS(UK) and affiliated clubs and Special Interest Groups (SIGs), all of which feature an abundance of imagination.

Above: Revered military modeller Phil Stucinskas displayed this magnificent La Glieze 1944 diorama on the Four Corners Modelling Club stand. The vehicle is Dragon’s 1/35 Sd.Kfz.138/1 ‘Grille’.

Without further ado, here is a selection of the thousands of models on display:

Above: East Kent modeller Peter Buckingham converted his Fisher 1/32 Ryan PT-22 into the S-T-3S prototype, as seen in San Diego, California during 1940... complementing his splendid build with a beautiful metallic finish.

Above: Amazingly, IPMS Harrow member Nick Hooper’s 1/48 Fairey Delta 2 research aircraft was completed entirely from scratch.

Above: Abingdon IPMS themed its display as a 1943-2023 comparison. Wilson Manson’s basic Tamiya 1/350 IJN Kagero was augmented with photo-etched railings plus fine rigging.

Above: One of the most eye-catching models on the IPMS BDAC stand was this magnificent Tamiya 1/48 Heinkel He 162A-2 by Matt Willis, who built it as a captured airframe used post-war by the French Armée de l’Air.

Above: The Earley Risers was another club that themed its display – this year all models were associated with the notion of ‘going green’, such as this exceptional Tamiya 1/35 Dragon Wagon by Nigel Atkins.

Above: Modelling doesn’t have to be entirely serious – as this egg-celent collection of egg-scale builds on the East Neuk stand shows, it can be as much of a yolk as you want!

Above: Poole Vikings Model Club member Greg Lock’s 1/48 Tamiya Spitfire build was incredibly clever in being painted to emulate a period photo.

Above: It’s always pleasing to see a well-finished Corsair II. IPMS Cleveland member Dave Norman’s 1/72 Hobby Boss A-7E of the US Navy’s VA-97 during Operation Eagle Claw certainly ticked all the boxes.
