East Quay

Small engines and short trains are the order of the day at this charming quayside station modelled in ‘OO’. CHRIS LANGDON explains the story of this compact exhibition layout which is now owned by St Neots Model Railway Club.Photography, Mike Wild

EAST QUAY was conceived and built by Mick Payne who has modelled in 4mm ‘EM’ gauge for 35 years. With today’s improvements in proprietary track and stock, he decided to build a small exhibition layout using ‘OO’ gauge ready-made track and ready-to-run locomotives and stock. This would save a considerable amount of time and effort, but still allow the creation of a finescale feel through the buildings and landscaping.

The layout is set in a small coastal town situated on a river estuary somewhere in the South West of England. A ferry crosses the estuary departing from the left-hand end of the harbour when the tide allows. A number of small businesses have prospered because of the trade brought in by the ferry. However, East Quay has a short platform with limited passenger facilities, but quite a busy goods yard.
