BUILDING EDUARD’S ‘ANGEL OF MERCY’ B-25J

North American’s B-25 Mitchell is arguably one of the most famous medium bombers of World War Two. It catapulted to fame on April 18, 1942, when 16 aircraft led by famed aviator Lt Col Jimmy Doolittle bombed mainland Japan in a surprise raid launched from the deck of the USS Hornet. Although the raid inflicted minor damage, it was a major boost to American morale in the aftermath of the Pearl Harbor attack.

During the war, the B-25 served in almost every theatre of operation. Its versatile nature meant it was employed in several roles including level bombing, strafing, ground-attack, photo-reconnaissance and torpedo bombing. Others served as trainers and, after World War Two, hundreds more were converted for that purpose. A total of 9,816 were built, used by several nations, both during the conflict and for many years after the end of fighting.
