THE FORTRESS REVISITED

THE FORTRESS REVISITED

Schiffer Publishing has released its second volume on the iconic B-17, in the popular Legends of Warfare Aviation series.

THE FORTRESS REVISITED

An affordable reference book is always a treat, and those in Schiffer’s Legends of Warfare canon offer excellent value due to the quality of imagery. It’s first work on the B-17, covering the Model 299 to B-17D, is now followed by volume 2, exploring the E-H sub-types.

THE FORTRESS REVISITED

This is slightly larger at 128 pages, but the format is the same inside the hardback cover, with a dedicated and chronological section for each version, all having an opening narrative before the array of captioned photos (a mix of colour and black and white). The common denominator is that the imagery is superb, offering close-up detail as well as studies of entire airframes, so you can appreciate the nuances of camouflage and wear and tear, as well as finesse the finer structural features of your build, whatever the kit.

Colour shots of camouflaged machines are particularly useful, to help ensure the right paint shades are employed (and to guide you in the appropriate weathering); the period studies in general ooze character. There are also glimpses of restored museum examples, including the storied Memphis Belle, and the walk-round photos of these airframes offer extensive detail. This series offers many books on different war machines, in the air, on land and at sea, so you can build quite the matching collection.
