Certain aircraft types deserve to be covered by a truly great book… and modellers especially will support that mantra. So, when an already good reference becomes even better it really is cause for celebration.

That’s exactly what has happened with Classic Publications’ original work on the fascinating Henschel Hs 129. This substantial hardback from 1996 was reissued by Chandos Publications in 2019, after having a root-and-branch transformation with updated text, images and colour artwork. Thankfully, and if you missed it on its first re-release, this handsome tome is now available again on a strictly limited basis.

While the original work featured 340 pages, the new version has 296; and despite eschewing the two large gatefold artworks available first time around, this rework makes the best of modern design theory and brand-new colour profiles, which better those first provided. The artworks represent various camouflage schemes, employed on the Eastern Front as well as in North Africa. Ultimately, the full story of this characterful machine is told in exhaustive detail, with the inclusion of personal narratives, myriad period images, factory drawings, and excellent scale plans.

Chandos has also re-released its superb book Blitz Bombers, about the Arado Ar 234 with Kampfgeschwader 76, highlighted here

In short, there’s everything a modeller could want, from back story and weapons loads, to colour scheme inspiration and a thorough exploration of the type’s structural nuances. There’s also plenty to consider regarding potential model displays and dioramas, via the wartime airfield photos. This stunning book costs £60 direct from Chandos, but can be discounted as part of a multiple purchase. If you are planning to represent the Hs 129 in any scale – Italeri 1/72, Hasegawa-Revell 1/48, or Zoukei-Mura 1/32 – it’s an unmissable reference tool worthy of the investment.
