Graham Farish's all-new Class 158

These stylish DMUs are the subject of an all-new ‘N’ gauge model. MARK CHIVERS assesses its execution and running qualities.

Bachmann’s policy of upgrading some of its older models in the Graham Farish range continues apace with the arrival of this all-new ‘N’ gauge Class 158 Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU).

Built by British Rail Engineering at Derby, the Class 158 DMUs were intended for use on BR’s Provincial sector passenger workings, with the first entering service with ScotRail in 1990.

They were built in two and three-car forms, with 180 units completed by 1992. The units have enjoyed a wide sphere of operation through the years and can be found on routes the length and breadth of the rail network from Wick and Thurso in the North of Scotland to Penzance in the South West.

Bachmann’s all new ‘N’ gauge model is set to appear in no less than 11 different identities covering BR Regional Railways, Arriva Trains Wales, Central Trains, East Midlands Trains, GWR, Northern and ScotRail Saltire, with several colour schemes available with a choice of two running numbers…
