AMONGST the most photographed trains on the British railway network today are the seasonal Rail Head Treatment Trains (RHTT) which run every autumn. These Sandite and water jet trains have been assembled to allow trains to stop safely during the leaf fall season and have operated in top-and-tail format with pairs of Class 20s, 37s, 47s, 56s, 57s, 66s, 67, 68s and 73s.
The latest Hatton’s Originals product for ‘OO’gauge models the FEA-F container flats and specialised modules which were built for Network Rail. The fleet of 50 wagons was ordered in 2003 and entered service in 2004 and mainly operates in pairs, though some workings are strengthened to three vehicles. The trains result in notoriously filthy locomotives, caused by the Sandite solution which is sprayed onto the track and in turn obliterates the bodywork of the locomotives working the trains.
