Hornby’s Class 08 shunts into TT:120

The humble Class 08 0-6-0 diesel shunter is now available for ‘TT:120’ scale from Hornby. MIKE WILD takes a closer look at this compact new arrival for the scale.

Everyone can make space for a Class 08 diesel shunter on their layout if it is set after 1952. More than 1,000 of the English Electric 350hp 0-6-0s were built to provide motive power to goods yards and stations to shunt rolling stock for main line trains.

The design originated in 1944 with the LMS and English Electric, setting the template for the BR standard design that has remained in continuous service over seven decades with British Rail and privatisation era operators. Even today they are still at work with main line railway companies while more than 85 have entered preservation where they continue to provide essential service managing rolling stock and hauling permanent way trains.
