Bachmann’s all-new Gresley ‘V2’ has been designed with digital sound in mind, but is there a way to introduce a bigger and more powerful speaker in the 2-6-2? MIKE WILD explores the options with a brand new sound file from Locoman Sounds.

THE GRESLEY ‘V2’ 2-6-2s were one of the legendary London and North Eastern Railway Chief Mechanical Engineer’s best designs. Alongside the likes of the ‘A3’ and ‘A4’ class ‘Pacifics’, Sir Nigel Gresley’s ‘V2s’ were the ultimate in mixed traffic locomotives - as capable of hauling 15-20 coach trains on the East Coast Main Line as they were lengthy goods trains.
In total 184 were built by the LNER’s Doncaster and Darlington Works between 1936 and 1944 with all of the class entering BR stock in 1948. The last was withdrawn in 1966, but fortunately the first of the class – 60800 Green Arrow – was saved for the nation as part of the National Collection.
