During February the Hornby Magazine team took on construction of a series of four micro layouts using an assortment of spare baseboards in ‘OO’, ‘OO9’, ‘O’ and ‘N’ gauge. MIKE WILD and MARK CHIVERS reveal what we built and how we went about creating these compact scenes.
MORE OFTEN THAN not we see micro layouts being built in ‘OO’ gauge. That’s not to say that there aren’t compact layouts in other scales, just that 4mm scale seems to be the primary choice for this type of model railway. This got us thinking about what we could make in other scales and the space that would be required and the result is a multi-layout build using a collection of four spare baseboards which were waiting for their moment.
Our plan was simple on paper – to design and build (at least to a working standard, if not fully complete) a series of layouts in different scales. All needed to fit in with the micro/compact layout theme and we wanted each to have a different theme and style to it. Naturally ‘OO’ gauge had to be a part of that, but we also wanted to see what was possible in ‘N’ gauge, ‘OO9’ narrow gauge and ‘O’ gauge too, putting all the main British ready-to-run scales side by side in one big challenge.
