Painting a GNR Signalbox

One of 2024’s additions to the PJM Models collection of laser-cut kits available from the Key Model World Shop is this Great Northern Railway signalbox. MIKE WILD explains how he painted the structure.

Painting doesn’t have to be difficult, and buildings are a great way to build up painting techniques using aerosol cans and brushes. This guide focuses on the steps taken to paint a PJM Models laser-cut kit of a Great Northern Railway signalbox for ‘OO’ gauge – but the methods are readily applicable to other scales.

The laser-cut kit was built as per the instructions with the exception of the window frames and glazing which were omitted to allow spray painting of the base colour and frames.

Spray painting is a great way to get an even finish on a simple structure like this, and you don’t need an airbrush either. We use Halfords spray paints for priming and base colours as they are easily sourced and offer good spray control from the nozzle. The most important points to remember with spray painting are to work outside or with an extractor and always wear a mask, even when outside, to prevent inhalation of paint particles.
