Having dazzled 1/35 fans, Rye Field Model (RFM) has turned its attention to the growing appeal of 1/48... its first offering being a superb M1240A1 M-ATV.
The Oshkosh M1240A1 M-ATV is one of several Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle designs created in response to operational requirements by US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, with its structure configured to provide maximum protection to its occupants. Obvious immediately is the type’s large size, in part due to the raised suspension and inclusion of a v-shaped blast plate that helps to deflect the blast from a mine or improvised explosive device. There’s also extensive armour plating, plus (on the standard version) an open cargo area. Adding to the vehicle’s height (it’s taller than an M1 Abrams main battle tank) is either an M153 Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) or Gunner Protection Kit (GPK) armoured turret. These can mount weapons such as a .50 cal or M240 machine guns or an Mk.19 grenade launcher, BGM-71 TOW launcher or M230 chain gun.
