MPM’s original 1/72 A-20 tooling again forms the basis of a Special Hobby reissue. This time it’s the 'G' model in ‘Low Altitude Raiders’ guise… as CHRIS CLIFFORD discovers.
In terms of strafing in World War Two’s Pacific Theatre, the B-25 often gets the lion’s share of coverage – but the Douglas A-20G also performed the task along with low-level bombing. The latter type was first tooled by MPM in 2007 and the parts have been adapted many times to replicate different Havoc/Boston variants. Special Hobby started to re-box MPM’s kit in 2014 and again, different sub-types have appeared since.
This welcome return of the gun-nosed A-20G offers decals for two airframes, one a USAAF example, the other in Royal Australian Air Force markings. On first inspection, MPM’s moulding is impressive for the time period and goes beyond the limited-run format previously embraced. Panel line engraving is reasonably consistent, flying control surface texture is convincing and there are delicate recessed rivets on wing underside panels.
