Built at English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry at Newton-le-Willows in the late 1960s, 50 English Electric Type 4s were built for use on the northern section of the West Coast Main Line (WCML) in a bid to improve timings over this stretch following the introduction of the accelerated electric service on the route south of Crewe. During their time on the London Midland Region, they could be found on passenger and freight trains.

Following the end of a lease deal with English Electric in 1973 - and with electrification of the northern section of the WCML complete the following year - the gradual migration to the Western Region (WR) was under way, which in turn displaced diesel-hydraulic traction. Later, a major refurbishment programme in the late 1970s/early 1980s gave the locomotives a new lease of life on the Western Region hauling passenger, parc…
