A fresh set of US Eighth Air Force decals has been added to Airfix’s pleasing 1/72 P-51D.

If you’re in the market for a wallet-friendly 1/72 Mustang that has respectable levels of detail, Airfix’s tooling is always worth considering. There’s now extra impetus for those wanting to model the type, as the company has reissued the original styrene parts with new decals as kit A01004B.

Its new scheme represents the P-51D 44-72472/6N-C Pauline, of the 505th Fighter Squadron, 339th Fighter Group, while at Fowlmere, Cambridgeshire in 1944. The airframe was flown by Lt Col Joseph L Thury, who amassed 28 air-to-ground strafing ‘kills’, plus 2.5 in the air.

Airfix’s 1/72 P-51D has separate flaps, a dual-position radiator outlet and reasonably well-detailed cockpit, and you can pose the canopy open or closed. Wheels-down or in-flight formats are also possible. This kit is superb value too, at just £8.99 direct from Airfix and its official stockists.
