REISSUED GAUNTLET BIPLANE FROM AZ MODEL

Biplane fans, and especially those keen on the so-called ‘silver period’, have a generally pleasing little rendition of the Gloster Gauntlet thanks to AZ Model. First released in 2008 but in various boxings since, the kit emulated the Mk.I, followed quickly by the Mk.II… and it’s the latter sub-type that’s been reissued with fresh decals under the ‘RAF’ legend (AZ 7867). Note, though, that the early boxings featured additional resin and photo-etched brass details, but here, the reissue is an all-styrene affair apart from the windscreen (flat acetate).

Three styrene runners carry parts in AZ’s typical limited-run format – no locating pins, slightly soft detail in places (but with impressive flourishes elsewhere) and rather heavy mould seams here and there. Yet, with care, attention and a little tenacity, you can create a worthy replica of this attractive biplane. Best of all, this boxing offers differing colour schemes. Silver-period devotees will love the two interwar examples in sprayed aluminium (which have appropriately flashy squadron markings), but those wanting something different can employ the late-service livery of Dark …
