FLOWER AFLOAT

ADVANCED BUILD

In his first build for Airfix Model World/Key Model World, Toby Knight nurtures Black Cat Models’ new-tool 1/350 Flower Class Corvette and sets it in an appropriate Atlantic Ocean seascape.

FLOWER AFLOAT

The Flower Class corvette design was a pre-war acknowledgement that, should there be war between Britain and Germany, the Admiralty had a distinct lack of both coastal and ocean-going ships that could escort convoys. Just six months before World War Two, a variety of designs were discussed, with cost, build time, weight and speed all factors under consideration. Eventually a modified whaler design was selected, fitted with a 4in gun forward of the bridge, up-to-date anti-submarine (AS) equipment plus limited anti-aircraft (AA) defences.

Above: Small parts were mounted on coffee stirrers for ease of painting as this would have been difficult after they had been attached to the model.

Above: Crisp detail was evident immediately on the bridge structure, from the watertight doors to the anti-splinter mats surrounding the open section.
