FAQ MODELLING ESSENTIALS

Looking for the best place to build your model railway? Hornby Magazine highlights five of the best locations around the average home.

1. THE SPARE ROOM

The most comfortable, convenient and cost effective place to house a model railway is in a spare room. The average family home will have up to a 12ft x 8ft space available in a bedroom which could be used for a layout in any scale from ‘N’ to ‘O’ gauge with consideration to its design and trackplan. If the room is multi-purpose, a shelf layout along one or two walls of the room might be the best option or, for the ultimate in versatility, a portable layout which can be packed away into a cupboard allowing the full floor space to be regained for visitors or other purposes. The biggest restriction in using a bedroom is the amount of space available which will restrict overall layout size.
