10 TOP TIPS

ABOVE: Sectional track pieces are the simplest to join and lay. Each component comes with pre-fitted rail joiners and they are all made to suit specific geometry. Select the right components using the diagrams available from Hornby and Peco and you can start building straight away. The same type of sectional track is delivered as part of train sets.

ABOVE: To join two pieces of track a smooth and level surface is advisable. Bring the two parts together and locate the bare rail ends into the rail joiners on the others. Gently start the process of pushing the parts together ensure that the rails sit inside the joiners.

ABOVE: Once connected together the railheads should be flush at the upper surface to give a smooth joint between the two sections. If this hasn’t happened separate the pieces and realign them.

ABOVE: Track pins are used to secure track to a permanent baseboard. Use a pair of pliers to position the pin in the pre-drilled hole in the sleeper web. Use firm pressure to press the tip of the pin into the wood below. To co…
