The Cornish main line station of Lostwithiel has been the subject of three layouts for ROB ELLIOTT. Here he reveals the full story behind this inspirational ‘N’ gauge layout which encompasses the main line and the Fowey branch – all in a spare bedroom!

This is my third layout based on Lostwithiel in Cornwall. When my wife and I were looking for our first house six years ago, one of the conditions was a spare room to house a permanent ‘N’ gauge layout and modelling desk. I was lucky enough that my wife agreed so long as she got a sewing room as well.

Work commenced on one of the smaller back bedrooms (9ft x 9ft) almost immediately after moving in which involved painting the walls a plain, sky blue colour which would make a simple, clean backscene to the new layout.

My main requirements for the layout were to create a reasonable representation of Lostwithiel station, crossing and adjacent sidings, the branch line to Fowey station incorporating Golant causeway and the clay docks at Carne Point, a scaled down version of the goods shed and dairy at Lostwithiel together with a continuous run double track main line and up and down good…
