THE North Eastern Railway’s petrol-electric Autocars of 1903 are one of the overlooked pioneers of the modern railway system. At the turn of the 20th century railway engineering was focused on steam locomotive development, but Vincent Raven – the Assistant Chief Mechanical Engineer at the North Eastern Railway – saw the advantage of electric traction for main line railway applications.
