Rapido Trains UK has indicated that it is to produce an all-new ‘OO’ gauge United States Army Transportation Corps (USATC) ‘S160’ 2-8-0 steam locomotive.
More than 2,000 ‘S160’ 2-8-0s were built for use during the Second World War, primarily across Europe, although they did also operate in Africa, Asia and South America too. 800 were shipped to the UK in the early 1940s for use during the war effort, ahead of them all being deployed abroad. The first batch of 400 were shared between the Big Four railway companies for running-in, while the second batch were stored, pending deployment.
Rapido Trains UK teased its plans as part of a marketing campaign on social media.
