There is plenty of variety in the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway’s stations - from classic country single platform affairs to busy junctions. MIKE WILD takes inspiration from four locations to create three track plans designed to fit in a spare bedroom or single garage.

SOMERSET & DORSET Celebration

LAYOUT PLANNING is one of the great pastimes of railway modelling and something to enjoy. It’s the opportunity to dream big, plan wildly and think about what you could create. Once the dreaming is over, most of us then need to think ‘inside the box’ and plan a layout which fits in a given space. That’s exactly what we have done here with a trio of track plans taking inspiration from the Somerset & Dorset route which have been drawn to fit into a 12ft x 8ft spare room or a 16ft x 8ft garage.

Choosing the locations for these plans was the first step. Having researched a number of stations along the line, there were four which stood out: Midford which had the divide from single to double track midway across the viaduct, Radstock North for its curved platform, Midsomer Norton South for its compact goods yard and Evercreech Junction for its sidings and operational value.
