THE HEAVY FREIGHT Class 58s were introduced in the early 1980s as a follow up to BR’s first dedicated heavy freight diesel- electric design, the Class 56. The ‘58s’ were designed with ease of maintenance in mind with a narrow engine compartment and modular body sections which could be removed to facilitate repairs.
