Kev Baxter takes on the challenge of replicating the haphazard, weather-worn appearance of Cold War Royal Danish Air Force F-100D Super Sabres, with Tamiya’s re-boxing of ESCI’s 1/72 kit.
Generally, I tend to build kits of aircraft that have a passing personal connection, and photos of battered and worn Danish F-100Ds have long been a modelling inspiration. This interest was sparked after witnessing pair of them howling around the visual circuit at RAF Wildenrath (then in West Germany) in 1980. Fleeting though this four-decade-old memory was, it left an indelible mark and finally, it was decided to realise it in scale form. In 1/72, the preferred choice was ESCI’s 1982 offering, since re-boxed by Italeri and Tamiya. Despite its age, it can still be made into a worthy project since it has an excellent shape and finely recessed panel lines. Extra detail can be added via a dash of aftermarket wizardry. Trumpeter’s 2009 kit could have been an option, but its scrawny nose and other issues would have meant more corrective work.
