Staff Projects: Quarry Progress

Topley Dale’s new quarry scene has taken big steps forward this autumn and is well on the way to completion. MIKE WILD rounds up the latest developments and explains how the track and ground cover has been weathered for a more realistic finish. 

THE QUARRY SCENE on Topley Dale’s diversion route has been making rapid progress of late and if you tuned in to our Great Electric Train Show Virtual Exhibition or the November edition of the Hornby Magazine Show you will have seen more of it on film too.

It’s been an enjoyable project which is creating a new backdrop to the railway which means this typical ‘OO’ gauge double track continuous run layout is rapidly approaching four sides of scenery avoiding the wide expanse of storage dominating one side.

The latest progress has seen the quarry buildings weathered with DCC Concepts weathering powders, the industrial engine shed built from the classic Dapol plastic kit, sidings finalised and ballasted, ground cover added and the road bridge which creates the entrance to the scene has been modelled – although there are a few more details to add to that. In between around 20 new castings have been made with Woodland Scenics Hydrocal to create the rock…
