WORKBENCH: Class 20 weathering – Part 1

The Class 20 offers potential for detailed weathering effects. TIM SHACKLETON brushes up on the basics of weathering with a pair of Bachmann Class 20s in 'OO' gauge.

REFRESHER COURSES are always useful – whether they relate to your CPR training or driving skills – and here I thought we’d take another look at the basics of weathering.

Because I do so much weathering, I’m aware of how my approach steadily evolves and polishes itself - but for those who only occasionally pick up an airbrush or buy weathering powders, your techniques will understandably get a little rusty over time. So let’s keep it simple and remind ourselves of what we’re doing and why.

As delivered, there were three basic varieties of these English Electric machines. 1957-built D8002 at Willesden on 19 April 1963 is a classic ‘pilot scheme’ loco in plain green livery. Like the first 20 members of the class it has oval buffers, headcode discs  and flat-sided bogies (often swapped between class members) with four sandboxes per bogie. Note the gap in the handrail where an access ladder had until recently been located. The first 75 or so initially ran in service with these ladders on the right-hand side only but they were removed between 1961 and 1963 following concerns over proximity to overhead wires.
