Home for your railway

The most comfortable, convenient and cost effective place to house a model railway is in a spare room. The average family home will have up to a 12ft x 8ft space available in a bedroom which could be used for a layout in any scale from ‘N’ to ‘O’ gauge with consideration to its design and trackplan. If the room is multi-purpose, a shelf layout along one or two wall of the room might be the best option or, for the ultimate in versatility, a portable layout which can be packed away into a cupboard allowing the full floor space to be regained for visitors or other purposes. The biggest restriction in using a bedroom is the amount of space available which will restrict overall layout size.

Many homes have a loft space, but not all will be usable. The most important thing to note about a loft space is that they aren’t designed for use as a room without modification and changing their use should be done with planning permission and a professional builder.
