Woodland on a Budget

Model trees are readily available, but DAN EVASON reckons you can make them yourself for pennies – as he demonstrates in this latest ‘OO’ gauge scene.

Most model railways will need trees on them, and often more than expected. Blair Atholl to Drumochter is reckoned to have more than 1,500 – and while that is a very high number, even a relatively small layout could easily get into double figures.

However, even the cheapest ‘ready to plant’ models get expensive if you are buying a lot of them.

I am always on the lookout to see if I can make items myself to save a few pennies – with the added bonus that you can create something individual that really suits your scene.

Making a model railway forest on a budget

After being inspired by a family woodland walk and studying Scots Pines, I decided to have a go at creating my own. For this I used some very basic off-the-shelf items to create what I think to be good looking and realistic trees, along with some finer details from Scale Model Scenery and Modelu to really help set the scene.
