GROWLING MISSILES

GROWLING MISSILES

Having delighted modellers with its latest Russian aircraft and submarines, Zvezda has turned its attention to surface-to-air-missiles, with a new tooling of the S-400 ‘Triumf’.

Zvezda 1/72 S-100 Triumf

Known by NATO as the SA-21 Growler, Zvezda’s kit (5068) comprises five styrene runners plus eight solid vinyl tyres – the firm is to be commended for the detail they’ve packed into the well-moulded parts, which enable a single Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) to be built. The cab receives a well-appointed interior, but the highlight is arguably the launcher mechanism, followed narrowly by the beautifully rendered engine, transmission and suspension. The TEL can be built-in transit or firing configuration; the erector/launcher arm is just clicked into place, so it should be possible to alter its position. Markings are included for three vehicles, two depicting TELs deployed to Sevastopol in the Crimea during 2019, while the third has parade stripes and portrays a participant in the 2017 Moscow Victory Parade. While the S-400 TEL will look impressive on its own, hopefully it will be joined by the associated Tomb Stone or Grave Stone targeting radars.
