The early version of this amphibious hauler can now be built courtesy of Das Werk, which adds new parts and decals to Gecko Models’ original 1/35 kit. CHRIS CLIFFORD investigates.
Three versions of the 1950s-designed LARC-V have been released by Gecko Models since 2021. They depict the ‘Lighter, Amphibious Resupply, Cargo 5 ton’, which has an aluminium hull and although created in the US, it’s been used by various countries… and it’s still in service.
Gecko portrayed a Vietnam War vehicle, along with Extra Armour and Modern versions. Most of the components from these feature in Das Werk’s new boxing of the Gecko LARC-V (DW35034), but there are new styrene parts and decals to cater for the machines represented by the kit colour schemes. Regardless, you’ll be building what’s essentially a more modern equivalent of the famous wartime DUKW fielded by the Allies. Here, the early version comes on 15 grey styrene runners, but there is also a clear frame and a one-piece lower hull. A photo-etched brass fret is also present, plus a length of twine and rubber tyres.
