EWS exclusive Class 37/4

The Bachmann Collectors Club range features this fine model of EWS liveried Class 37/4 37422 Cardiff Canton. MIKE WILD checks out the finer details.

Bachmann’s all-new model of the ever-popular English Electric Class 37 first touched down in Autumn 2022, and a wide range of liveries have been made available including BR, Railfreight and privatisation schemes. However, the early 2000s EWS maroon and gold is only currently available on this Collectors Club exclusive model of 37422.

The base tooling is the same as that employed in our original review sample of 37401 in HM184, but this time the livery is detailed with a much greater range of embellishments as applied to the real 37422, while there is also a range of locomotive-specific details to ensure the Type 3 is modelled correctly.

The real 37422 started out as D6966 when it was completed at English Electric’s Vulcan Foundry in February 1965. It was renumbered 37276 in March 1974 and was then selected as one of the 31 Class 37s to be overhauled and fitted with Electric Train Heating (ETH) for use on passenger services, becoming 37422 in January 1986.
