HERE at Hornby Magazine we regularly receive enquiries requesting advice on the best way to develop a layout from scratch.

Before deciding on the type of layout you wish to build, consider for a moment where it will be housed. The more room you have, the greater the scope for the dream layout to develop. Scale and gauge are vital as they will determine whether it will fit the space available and you will need to establish whether it will be permanent or portable, a necessary consideration if the layout is being worked on in a spare bedroom.

Attention can then turn to the fun elements of developing a layout with features you want to include and its overall style though for the newcomer this opens up a whole world of questions. Do you want to run trains continuously or would you prefer the relaxed pace of a shunting yard? Will there be multiple stations or large expanses of countryside?
